A PERSONAL COVENANT

The Work & Career Declaration

TWENTY-TWO PRINCIPLES · IN ORDER OF WEIGHT · FIRST EDITION

From this day forward, I declare my commitment to the endeavour that claims forty years of my waking time. I will treat work as something I shape rather than something that happens to me. I will not mistake exhaustion for contribution, or a title for a life. And I will build what I am becoming, not only what I am paid.

I BUILD Making the work

  • 1Shape the job you have before you go looking for another one. Job crafting — reshaping tasks, relationships and how you frame the work — predicts engagement, performance and career development across 122 studies. Training people to do it produces reliable improvement. Most of the job you want is reachable from inside the job you have, and almost nobody tries that first.

21 principles remain — including the Unpretty Truths, the principles that contradict conventional wisdom outright, with the evidence for why. That is the part nobody else prints.

What this does not claim

No study licenses staying or leaving. No finding promises that passion, persistence or crafting will overcome a structurally bad situation. The honest claim is narrower: engagement and job crafting are real, modifiable and predictive; burnout is a documented syndrome with downstream health consequences rather than a character question; psychological safety is the strongest team variable yet identified; and a meaningful share of career outcome is determined by conditions you did not set and cannot be held responsible for.
