A PERSONAL COVENANT

The Relationships Declaration

EIGHTEEN PRINCIPLES · IN ORDER OF WEIGHT · FIRST EDITION

From this day forward, I declare my commitment to the person I keep becoming with others. I will nurture the key connections in my life with protected, undistracted time. I will see the other person's point of view before defending my own. And where I am building toward connection, I will invest in it as deliberately as I would any goal that matters.

I BUILD Making connection

  • 1Make the other person feel understood before you make yourself understood. Perceived responsiveness — the sense that another person understands you, values you, and cares about your welfare — is the single most consistently demonstrated predictor of relationship quality in the research. It holds across romantic partnerships, friendships, family and working relationships. Experimental work shows it can be induced deliberately, which means it is a practice rather than a temperament.

17 principles remain — including the Unpretty Truths, the principles that contradict conventional wisdom outright, with the evidence for why. That is the part nobody else prints.

What this does not claim

No study licenses marry or decline. No therapy result promises permanence. No finding about single life claims that everyone thrives alone. The honest claim is narrower and holds: connection quality — in whatever structure — carries more published weight for health and longevity than nearly anything else you could work on; maintenance and repair both have real but modest evidence; and the largest modifiable variable in your future relationships is your own pattern.
