A PERSONAL COVENANT

The Money Declaration

TWENTY-ONE PRINCIPLES · IN ORDER OF WEIGHT · FIRST EDITION

From this day forward, I declare my commitment to money as a servant with a job description — funding a life consistent with my values, never a master, a scoreboard, or an anesthetic. I will look at the numbers on a schedule, not when fear forces me to. I will conduct every money decision with honesty, including honesty with myself.

  • 1Open it. Whatever it is, open it today. Financial avoidance is a self-reinforcing cycle: anxiety drives avoidance, avoidance prevents the knowledge that would reduce the anxiety, and the problem accumulates unattended while the fear of it grows. Avoidance is associated with higher financial anxiety and worse financial behaviour in both directions. The unopened envelope is the mechanism, not the symptom.

What this does not claim

No study shows that budgeting cures depression, that wealth guarantees wellbeing, or that any particular debt-payoff method is psychologically superior for everyone. The honest claim is narrower: debt burden carries some of the largest mental-health associations in this entire domain; income genuinely buys wellbeing for most people across the range; and financial education helps modestly and sticks best when it arrives at a moment of real decision — a moment much like this one.
