A PERSONAL COVENANT

The Identity & Purpose Declaration

TWENTY-THREE PRINCIPLES · IN ORDER OF WEIGHT · FIRST EDITION

From this day forward, I declare my commitment to knowing who I am and what I am for. I will build a self clear enough to act from rather than waiting to discover one. I will treat purpose as something constructed through commitment, not uncovered through searching. And I will not outsource the account of my own life to anybody else.

I BUILD Building the self

  • 1Build a purpose, because it predicts how long you live. A meta-analysis of ten prospective studies covering more than 136,000 participants found higher purpose associated with reduced all-cause mortality. It is among the few psychological variables with an effect of that order on physical outcomes, and it sits above everything else in this domain for that reason.

22 principles remain — including the Unpretty Truths, the principles that contradict conventional wisdom outright, with the evidence for why. That is the part nobody else prints.

What this does not claim

No finding establishes what any particular life is for, and nothing here supplies content — only the conditions under which content is built. The honest claim is narrower: purpose is associated with mortality outcomes at a magnitude unusual for a psychological variable; clarity of self-concept predicts wellbeing robustly; identity forms through exploration and commitment rather than through discovery; and the coherence of the story you tell about your own life is itself a predictor, independent of what happened in it.
