I BUILD Building the place
- 1Secure stability before you optimise anything else. Housing quality and tenure stability independently predict wellbeing, health and developmental outcomes across the lifespan. Crowding, noise, structural condition and maintenance each carry measurable psychological cost. This sits first because it is the substrate every other principle here rests on.

What this does not claim
No finding establishes where anybody should live, and nothing here is available to people without the resources to choose — which is precisely the point of principle 9. The honest claim is narrower: housing quality and stability independently predict health and developmental outcomes; place attachment is among the most robust predictors in environmental psychology and is built rather than found; nature exposure is a moderate real input; and a substantial share of what feels like personal failure to thrive is a property of the place rather than of the person in it.
