A PERSONAL COVENANT

The Family Declaration

TWENTY-SIX PRINCIPLES · IN ORDER OF WEIGHT · FIRST EDITION

From this day forward, I declare my commitment to the family I inherited, the family I chose, and the family I am building. I will not repeat what was done to me simply because it was done. I will not confuse obligation with love, or proximity with closeness. And I will decide what I pass on rather than transmit it by default.

If anyone in your family is unsafe, this document is not the next step. In the United States, the National Domestic Violence Hotline is 1-800-799-7233 and 988 reaches the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. If a child is at risk, contact child protection or emergency services.

I BUILD Building the family

  • 1Decide what you transmit, because the default is transmission. Parental attachment representations predict child attachment security at one of the strongest effect sizes in developmental psychology, and harsh parenting, marital conflict and economic pressure show continuity across three generations in longitudinal work. What is not examined is passed on. That is the mechanism and it operates whether or not anyone chooses it.

What this does not claim

No finding licenses cutting off or holding on. No study establishes what any particular family owes any particular member. The honest claim is narrower: patterns transmit across generations unless they are examined; coparenting quality and conflict exposure predict child outcomes more reliably than household structure; estrangement is common and is not inherently harmful; and the belief that families are forever is a wish rather than a finding.
