A PERSONAL COVENANT

The Community & Belonging Declaration

TWENTY-THREE PRINCIPLES · IN ORDER OF WEIGHT · FIRST EDITION

From this day forward, I declare my commitment to the people who know me outside my house. I will treat belonging as something built rather than something waited for. I will not mistake proximity for community, or an audience for a circle. And I will contribute to the places I live in rather than only consume them.

I BUILD Building belonging

  • 1Treat belonging as a need, not a preference. The drive to form and maintain social bonds has been argued to be as fundamental as hunger, and thwarted belonging predicts a wide range of psychological and physical consequences. Feeling genuinely included and valued is among the most consistently supported predictors of wellbeing in the literature. It is not a soft variable.

What this does not claim

No finding establishes how many people anybody needs, and nothing here licenses treating a small circle as a deficiency. The honest claim is narrower: belonging predicts wellbeing at the level of a fundamental need; exclusion produces measurable harm within minutes in laboratory conditions; volunteering is associated with reduced mortality beyond its social contact; and adult friendship is a construction project rather than a natural occurrence.
